=============

Nellie moved along the trail cut by the others; her new nano rifle, as she had named it, held firm against her shoulder as she moved. Behind her, she could hear the mechanical steps of Lucy, who walked backward, sweeping the pistol from side to side.

Ahead of her was a green line snaking through the dense jungle. She even had a little map in one corner of her vision. She could expand it at will to check their progress. There was also an ammo counter for both the pistol and the rifle. Finally, there was the shield reading. She was in her full suit, including helmet, because fuck this planet and its Abomi-toads.

“One minute to where Karl fell,” Lucy said as the pistol barked, a thump following in the moments after. “And one toad down.”

Nellie focused again, seeing a target appear on her HUD. It was just visible through a bit of brush. She aimed, fired, and felt the gentle kick of the rifle. Blood sprayed, a pale green, and the thing fell, dead.

They moved on, the sound dying away to just their own steps and the occasional burst of rifle or pistol fire.

“Here!” Nellie pointed to the fallen weapons lying in the path. Lucy stepped around her, mag-locking the pistol to Nellie’s thigh as she passed. She stooped to grab the fallen guns, and the bushes in front of her erupted.

Nellie fired, killing one of the attackers instantly and another as she began to slowly back away. The third one died as it landed, the rifle tearing the head back as it died. The fourth made it another step and died as Lucy twisted and fired.

“Behind you, fast,” Lucy said in her ear.

Nellie threw herself forward, twisting as she fell and racked the pump action before firing it point blank at the toad behind her.

“Well done!” Lucy said as she slung the rifle across her chest and picked up the pistols. “I know that was tough, but the life signs are fading, and I think speed is of the essence.”

Nellie took a deep, steadying breath, suddenly grateful she no longer had a heart to pound in fear.

“Let’s go,” Nellie said, striding forward.
